Leaving for his new area in 2 days!

Hello!

T-minus 2 days until takeoff! I'm so excited! I have officially packed up all of my things from the office and Elder Winders is all ready to fly solo!

I'm not sure if I have mentioned this before... but President Hayes is sick. Well, actually he got sick about a year ago and just didn't tell anybody about it. Two weeks ago it started to get pretty serious and he decided to go to a local clinic to see what was wrong with him. They couldn't find anything out, so Salt Lake told him he had to go to Utah for testing. Now we have a subsitute president, his name is President Arredondo. He served as a mission president in the Nicaragua North mission. I've been able to work with him a little bit when he has come into the office and he is a really nice guy. He really wants to help the mission. This week we had a mission conference where President talked to us about the importance of baptizing and gave us a lot of ideas on how to baptize more. I think it was exactly what the mission needed to hear. Everything happens for a reason, and maybe he was supposed to come here to share this message.

This week I have mostly been reviewing all of the office work with Elder Winders and have spent a lot of time finding news. We actually have had a lot of luck finding this week and I'm really excited for what is going to happen in this area after I leave. I have also been saying goodbye to a lot of the members around here, and it has actually been pretty hard. I have become pretty good friends with the members here and I'm going to miss them a lot!

That pretty much sums up my week here... I really am grateful for the opportunity that I have had to serve here in the office. I have learned a lot, but I am so ready to move on!

Sorry, I have been so bad with pictures over these last couple of months... here is one of me playing the bagpipes to make up for it!

Eduardo got baptized!

Hi!

I don't have a lot of time to write today... but guess what!! I had a baptism! Eduardo finally got baptized! It was so cool! Before he got baptized, he asked if he could say a prayer by the font. I said it was okay and left the room. He knelt down by the side of the font and started praying. After about 5 minutes, my comp looked in to see if he was okay and he was crying! He really understood the importance of his baptism and knew from that point on, he was starting a new point in his life.
The next day he got confirmed and in priesthood, they decided to give him the Aaronic Priesthood! It was so cool! I just had a lesson with him yesterday and we taught a really in depth lesson about the priesthood and it was awesome. He is so excited to progress in the church! I wish I had more time to tell you the awesome stories about his baptism, but it´ll have to wait.

The church is true, the Book of Mormon is true, and we always need to keep our testimonies strong!

Have a fantastic week!!!

Back to the Rainforest for Chase but this time on the Pacific Coast.

Hello all!

This week has been FABULOUS! Know why, I GOT MY REPLACEMENT! His name is Elder Winders and he is from Alaska. He´s really cool. He has about 8 months in the mission, so he is coming in with the same amount of time that I had when I came in to the office.

It's been fun training him on how to manage all of the migration stuff. I forgot how much I do, because I am just so use to the workload now... He is always sooo exhausted and stressed out. I feel kind of bad sometimes, but then I remember that that's exactly how I was when I came in! haha
We are prepping for changes together and it's been fun doing all that work with a helper! And speaking of changes... President told me where I´m going after the office in two weeks!! It's called Perez Zeledon or San Isidrio de Cartago. I'm going back to the hot rainforest!! Except this time it is going to be on the Pacific coast! I'm so excited to get back out there! It's a little branch and apparently it's having some problems so it will be cool to help out out there.

Two days ago I got to go to a very fancy web conference with the Guatemala mission about migration changes in Costa Rica. My comp, the migration secretary from the other mission, the church migration lawyers and I went to the Service Center of Costa Rica to meet with the head of Central American Mission Migration over a video conference. My comp was so lost, but it was really cool!

For todays P-day, I decided that I needed to make a last couple of purchases before I got shipped off far away, so we got permission to go to San Jose Centro. I originally went to look for new shoes to replace mine with holes in them, but then I got a little distracted. Elder Winders and I went to the sketchy part of San Jose and we found some really cool stores that sold all kinds of cheap stuff! We walked into this store that sold watches, glasses, bags, belts, coats, and all sorts of other designer stuff. We walked in and started looking at the watches... then we looked at the belts... then we looked at the glasses... and couldn't resist. The prices were just too good! I picked out a Louis Vuitton belt, a tag heuer watch, and some ray bans. I'm pretty sure they are real too. Elder Winders picked out a Gucci belt, a Deisel watch and Ray Bans. The grand total came out to be about $50 but we were able to talk her down $40 each. I'm so proud.
To top it all off, we decided to model our purchases... enjoy the pictures.

Tonight is going to be Eduardo´s baptism!! We had the interview last night and he seems so excited to be baptized! He is taking everything super seriously and say's he is so happy that he gets to take this important step in his life. I'm really curious to see how he will be after tonight!!

I hope you all have a good week! I love getting all your emails!!!

Praying for "Spiritual Experiences"

"Equilibren su vida con experiencias espirituales que les recuerden continuar ministrando a los demás diariamente."

"Balance your life with spiritual experiences that remind and prepare you for continued, daily ministering to others." - M. Russell Ballard
At the beginning of every change we get a new agenda that lasts for 6 weeks. As a mission tradition, we all decorate our agendas with pictures and quotes from the church magazines. This change I decided to make the main focus of my agenda this quote by Elder Ballard.

When I first started my mission I would pray for very specific and selfish things. I didn´t really understand how prayer worked. Now that I have some time in the mission, I have felt that some of my specific prayers haven´t been answered in exactly the way that I wanted, I have learned that I need to pray for "spiritual experiences". Sometimes after a really hard day, where I don´t see a lot of success, I ask myself, "Did I have a spiritual experience today?" Pretty quickly I can start to recognize all of the blessings that my Heavenly Father had given me throughout the day that I was so blind to see just a few seconds earlier. It is moments like these that motivate me to keep going at times when I feel like I´m not having success in the mission. In the mission you face problems with your investigators, your companion, yourself, and many other things, but if we put our trust in the Lord and realize that He´s always there, even when it doesn´t seem like it, we will have a much better outlook on life, and be much, much happier.
In other news...
Eduardo has agreed to officially get baptized!! On the condition that nobody goes to his baptism... it's going to be interesting to see what happens. We are hoping that it will be this Saturday!

We are still trying to find more people that actually want to listen to us.

It is raining a ton here and yesterday I forgot my umbrella in the house and got SOAKED. That's always fun though. haha
I hope that you all have a fantastic week and remember to pray for those spiritual experiences!

Message from Mom- Chase started training the new secretary and will be leaving the mission office in three weeks.  He is excited for the new experience.

Short e-mail this week.

Hello!

Sorry this email is going to be very short... this week I don't really get a P-day.

There were some emergency changes this week and President called us into the office to sort things out.

This week not much has happened. I wish I could tell you some amazing story about some miracle that happened... But sometimes you just have routine weeks in the mission. I think it´s so that you appreciate the good weeks more.
I hope you are all doing fantastic! I promise a good letter next week!

A lot of great experiences this week.

This week was a good one!! I think the Lord has finally decided that we have put up with enough and is starting to pour out the blessings that have been waiting for us for these past 6 months! I'll start out with a cool little story:

Two weeks ago I was driving with Elder Adams (I'm pretty sure I've posted a picture with him... he was one of the assistants) and we were going to pick up a cell phone from an area that was just closed down. As we were driving along, I noticed that one of the road signs had graffiti on it that said 916. And I was like woah that's pretty cool (because its my area code in Roseville). So I had Elder Adams sketch the graffiti and we continued on. After that, I didn't really think about it that much, until last Monday. Elder Fuller and I were walking around contacting because all of our appointments fell through, and we decided to contact this house that we thought two girls that we talked to the week before lived. As we go up to the house we start talking to three kids and a 23 year old named Arnold. We introduce ourselves as Mormons and they start asking why we are called Mormons. So I pull out my Book of Mormon and start explaining it. As I'm explaining it, Arnold takes the book out of my hand and opens to a random page and starts reading 2 Nephi 31: 20-21.
20 Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.

21 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen.

After reading that verse he looks up and says, "This book is from God!!" and I just look at him with my jaw dropped. How did he pick that verse out of allll the other verses? It was exactly what he needed to hear in that moment!
So anyways we started talking a little bit more and he said he wanted to hear more about this "Mormon Book" and took out his phone to save our number. When he turned on his phone, guess what his background was? The graffiti of 916 painted on a wall! I said, wait what is that...? and he said, "oh, that's me!" Apparently he just really likes the number 916 and started painting it everywhere he goes. He doesn't really know why. I explained that it's the area code where I am from and he thought it was the craziest thing ever! I don't know why his graffiti caught my attention so much two weeks earlier... but there was some reason to it.

After that we found the girls that we were looking for and they just happened to be with 8 friends who all wanted to hear about the Mormons. We ended up finding 11 news in just 30 minutes that night. haha

There were two other amazing things that happened this week, but for the sake of time, my fingers, and your patience I'll keep them short.
A couple of weeks ago we met a girl named Susie, who is amazing. She is 23 and is super nice. She is really curious about the gospel and wants to learn a lot more. She lives with her mom, stepdad, and two sisters. We hadn't been able to teach any other of the family members because they were always busy, but this week we were able to teach her mom and older sister Candy. Let me just say... these people are so prepared for the gospel! They are very active in an evangelic church, but there are lots of things that they don't agree with there. We taught the restoration and watched the Joseph Smith movie with them and they accepted the whole thing! Candy said that she feels a lot like Joseph Smith in the movie, and that the restoration just makes sense. She also said that she felt something special when we were teaching. Something that she liked, but couldn't explain. I took advantage of the opportunity and challenged them to be baptized and they accepted to be baptized in a month! I really hope that they can make it! It would be during my last week here and it would be soo cool!

Also, Eduardo finally is starting to come around. We went over a couple of days ago and started teaching about the principle of repentance. After a little bit of talking we got out of him that he was scared to make some big changes in his life and he didn't want to change too quickly. With the help of Alma, we were able to explain the importance of changing. We taught a cool lesson involving fire... I'll show you later haha, and he really felt a strong desire to change. After teaching the lesson he asked, "and when could I be ready to be baptized?" I just handed him the calandar on my phone and said, "this is the month of June. You pick the day." He decided on making a baptism goal for 3 weeks from now. I really hope that he can do it! He really wants to be baptized and is taking it really seriously! At the end of the prayer at the end of the lesson, he didn't lift up his head. I thought he must have been silently praying, but as he lifted up his head a couple of seconds later, tears were in his eyes. He understood in that moment that what he had committed to was one of the most important decisions of his life. It was such a cool experience.

Missions are so cool! They can be so hard, but can be so rewarding. There is nothing better than being fully immersed in the work of the Lord. Dedication, obedience, hard work, and perseverance bring miracles.

I hope you all have a great week!

Volcano erupted and ash is everywhere

Hi!

This week has been filled with a lot of embassy's, a lot of sitting around, and lot's and lot's of ash. I have been kept pretty busy with this new group of missionaries that came in and I've also been trying to prep for the next secretary that's coming in (I should start training in two weeks. WOOH!). Costa Rican migration laws are becoming a heck of a lot stricter now and I'm having to do a lot more work to try to keep the missionaries legal. I would write all of the new processes that I have to go through... but I don't want to bore you. In short, I'm going to have to spend even more time in the office figuring out ways to make the Costa Rican government accept new LDS missionaries in their country. It's a fun challenge.

This week I got sick with a cold... and then to make matters worse the Turrialba volcano blew up. The whole state of San Jose is COVERED in ash. It was kind of cool at first, but now its just annoying. The areas that are closer to the volcano have to walk around with funny looking masks, so at least I don't have to put up with that! haha

This week I got to play soccer with all of the youth from the ward! It was a lot of fun! We had quite a few investigators show up to play so it was a really good missionary moment too! I didn't have time to change clothes so I just played in my missionary clothes. Luckily my shoes held up just fine! haha

Below is a link to information regarding the erupted volcano.
